Pushing Buttons from the Start: 24 hours
So we sat there waiting for lost and confused people to show up so
we could guide them in the right direction. Jenn was going from one room in the
museum to the next looking for strays. I was much less proactive and thought
“heck if they want to look at another exhibit, that’s their prerogative”.
The Shame of Feeding your Face
With all of that walking around the Jewish museum, Jenn was
starting to get hungry. And with all of the gathering and ordering she had been
doing in the museum she had the audacity to ask me to go get food from the
buffet in the room where president Holland was giving his presentation.
“JENN! I’m not gonna be that classless Chris Farley that waltzes
in a room full of professionals to fill a plate with hamburgers and hors
d’oeuvres. I have self-respect!”
Jenn took a logical approach “The buffet is there for a reason and
no one is going to really care anyway. All I want is one of those sliders.
That’s all I want…please…”
“FINE!” I gave in after realizing that I was getting kind of
hungry too… That was a bad idea.
I walked in there and it was just like I thought it would be.
There was the sculptor working on Lincoln’s profile and President Holland
giving an eloquent presentation, almost as eloquent as the sound of me slopping
salad onto my plate with nasty looking sliders. I was getting judgmental
glances from all over and I realized that I had become “that guy”. All sense of
the word “cool” was fading as I decided to give into this woman’s request for a
nasty looking slider.
A Reminder In Etiquette
I came back to our “outpost” with shame and disgrace written all
over my face. Jenn just smiled and snatched the slider from plate and hungrily
shoved it in her mouth (as feminine as one can shove a slider in one’s mouth)
and then just as quickly spat it out.
I was at a loss. I didn’t know whether to be appalled, confused,
or offended. I had just given up my dignity to have all my efforts spat into a
napkin. This was our first date and she was already breeching serious dating etiquette.
“Are you out of your MIND! I just made a fool of myself to get you
that!”
“It was yucky and if it doesn’t taste good, I can’t swallow!”
I realized that I was dealing with a woman who had some serious
opinions…about everything! There was no luke-warm as we talked. It was going to
be interesting taking her for a spin in my old Mexican Speedster.
The Mexican Speedster!
A couple hours and we were packing up to go to Jenn’s Aunt Jan and
Uncle Merrill’s place. As soon as we got to the car, Jenn realized she was in
for a cramped and wild ride. It was my turn to take control!
The loud engine, two door, gutless wonder was my claim to fame (at
least with the Idaho and Utah police officers). I had been pulled over numerous
times even when I was behind someone going 5mph faster.
Why? DISCRIMINATION! Not only were they picking out my hot ride
from the rest of the cars, but they were approaching my vehicle with their
hands on their boom sticks. Sure, the car had a spoiler, but it never hurt a
soul!
Dad would always give me guff for getting pulled over, but in the
end I just happened to be the unlucky guy who filled the quota of another bored
police officer hoping to get an exciting chase going with a wild gangster. What they got was a fish that didn't put up fight. Im sure I was a major disappointment for most of those cops who were craving a little excitement.
Jenn was in for a ride and so was I ....as I soon found out.
