72 Life Changing Hours with Jenn: First 5 hours

Almond farm
The Almonds were just starting to bloom on the South Valley Almond farm where I was working. There was nothing like running through the rows with my neighbor Nester or just watching the sun go down as I played the guitar outside in the winter. Relaxing aromas, quiet solitude, and a simple routine: it was the quiet before the storm.

Linkedin Strategy

I had effectively leveraged myself on linkedin by joining the ranks of those who were connected with the unconquerable Jennifer Coltrin. Beautiful, serious, and all business; she was a dream for any guy, but for me it was strictly business. I was hoping to find out what she knew one way or another…

What started simply as a question of the farming company, grew to an informal interrogation. She was playing the interested mentor (being 3 years my senior). I’d heard about these kinds of tactics in Vietnam but that was far in the back of my mind. Nothing could touch me out here in Wasco, California, NOTHING!

Solitary Confinement

Maybe it was the solitary confinement, maybe it was the simple and savory potential of a new quest in life; whatever it was, it was entering me slowly. I wasn’t going to last long.
There were warning Questions like “where have you been in the world? What do you want to do with your life?”

What does that have to do with the price of rice in China!? I should have seen it coming, but I looked past them.  It was my outlet and it was always something to look forward to. Plus, she was generally interested in me and my success as my “mentor”.

Prying me Open

It started as 2 sentence responses on my end turned into paragraphs. She must have known my weaknesses in having to write what I truly felt. The torture was too much and I was opening up with every word. It was strictly therapeutic though, just like linkedin was strictly professional.  I needed it especially at that moment. My solitary conditions were wearing on my extrovert personality and I was on the verge of insanity. Jenn was no longer just a mentor; she was a penpal and even becoming a trusted friend.

Upping the Ante

What started on Linkedin quickly accelerated to Gmail. Writing was comfortable and was working fine. I felt an inside coaxing though. It was as if I was under a spell of sorts. She was teasing me by misspelling my name, asking a million questions, and just acting like a silly girl. And just like that I was the one upping-the-ante by deciding to make contact with this dangerous individual.

Who was I to know she would change all my plans? How did I know she would almost kill me numerous times because she didn’t know her lefts from her rights? I was cautious but at that moment I was captivated.

I decided a phone call wouldn't hurt. She may be good with words on a page, but I was sure she would be stumbling on the phone.

Much to my dismay, she was a smooth-talker and had me at “This is Jenn Coltrin”. It was a professional layer that I was going to have to peel, and yes, it intrigued me. There was a desperate call for help. It was going to take more than a couple jokes to get this girl to relax.

The Tables Turn

And just like that I was the one thinking I was in control. I was unorthodox, a little wild, and spontaneous. It was now my mission to get this girl to just lighten up. After throwing out some of my best jokes and flirting words, Jenn seemed like she was losing control. Or so I thought.

Then she told me she was going to be coming to L.A. to an event and wanted me to be her date. I was a bit taken back. She was impatient and I should have seen through her plot but I was blinded by the idea that it was my jokes and relaxing presence that was pushing her to such drastic actions.

Devious
She had a strategy from the beginning and everything was working exactly according to plan. Even better, she had me thinking I was in charge.

You Have Been Activated!

Everything had been through a secondary mode of communication. We were stepping it up to a face to face encounter. Everyone knows that is where casualties happen. Forget all of your romantic notions of Sleepless in Seattle. It wasn't going to turn out that way because I was too strong for that garbage.

This is where we were both activated. Neither of us had a clue what that weekend would bring, both of us had our missions in mind.

First 5 hours

It was time to pick this girl up and that meant I was going to get out of the Bakersfield smog-fest for at least a few days and enjoy some sunlight. I sat there listening to my country music as I lifted my arms up with steering wheel in order to prevent tacos from forming on my shirt.
I made it right on time and there she was ready to embrace me like an old friend. It was like going home at that moment.  I quickly snapped back to reality in order to fight all of the romantic hogwash that was running through my brain.

From the moment I got there Jenn was more than comfortable with me. She was asking me to search for attendants in the museum to let them know that President Holland was about to start his presentation on Abraham Lincoln.

Help-me-work date
I looked for a bit and then we got back and I was about to sit down and watch the presentation. Jenn informed me that “our” job was to sit at the front doors and make sure late comers knew where the presentation was.  I corrected her and let her know that was her job.  I got the look that a woman gives when you are screwing up a date and decided to stay.

And the clock struck 9pm without any major red flags, no fragrances, 5hrs and counting...
